SoNoPo® MeetUps Congratulations to those five
SoNoPo-lers who got their intro and info this morning! Here are the next two MeetUps for free information and demo sessions of Nordic Pole Walking in the southern style: - Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at 5:00 pm in Dellwood Park at the intersection of
Clifton Road and Ponce de Leon 30307. ------------------------ SoNoPo® Southern Nordic Poling – Bodies-in-Motion’s Nordic pole walking program Begun in Finland in the early 20th century as a summer training exercise for cross-country skiers and redefined for general fitness in 1997, Nordic pole walking adds a pair of specially-designed poles to your normal walk and, with instruction in the proper technique, your walk turns into a safe, total body workout. You will use 20% more of your body’s muscle mass, increase your body’s aerobic efficiency by 47% and reduce the impact on your joints just by adding the poles! You will also burn up to 50% more calories per hour than normal fitness walking. Call 678.665.9926 for more information. ------------------------- BODIES-IN-MOTION INSTRUCTOR INTERVIEW Louise Leonard is celebrating her 30th year as a fitness leader. ------------------------- MARY ARMSTRONG COMMEMORATION On October 22, 2011, there was a small gathering at
Mary Armstrong's gravesite to celebrate and commemorate her life. As a
co-founder of Bodies-in-Motion, Mary's life touched us all. Mary's
brother, Tom, joined several BIMI instructors/students at Westview
Cemetery and brought along the urn with Mary's ashes. The note below,
written by Molly Lay, BIMI Board Chairperson, captures the special
quality of that day. Dancing to "In the Mood" by the indomitable Bette Midler on that stunningly beautiful hillside overlooking the Abbey was wonderful and appropriate, as were the Sun Salutations lead by Kathy and, too, just the silences. Tom, your presence and reflections meant SO much to all of us and we thank you for being there for us and for making sure Mary was, too. Our "Magical
Mystery Tour" of the Abbey with its amazing architecture and beautiful
Georgia marble floors and crypts sent all of us into a time warp. The
silence in there was deafening. Then, a quick serendipitous stop at The
Wren's Nest to visit the new Executive Director, Sue Gilman, was
delightful and just added to the "warp" of the day. We left Mary's gravesite littered with flowers and meditations and the resonance of the music she loved. Love, ------------------------- SILVER JUBILEE CELBRATION! On June 25, 2011, friends, students and supporters of Bodies-in-Motion, Inc. gathered at the Seminole Studio to celebrate our 25th Anniversary with a pot-luck and swap. Old friends we had not seen for too long as well as new friends came by to partake in the good fellowship and fantastic, healthy food offerings. A special treat was a visit from our founder's niece, Allyson Harris, who dropped by with her daughter. We raised many a toast to Mary Armstrong's memory and to our dedicated students, instructors, Board members, officers and shareholders and to 25 wonderful years of sharing safe, fun exercise. Needlesstosay, we were all quite giddy after all those toasts! The un-swapped swap items were donated to the Atlanta Step-Up Society that benefits Atlanta's homeless.

On October 17, 2010 some of the best instructors available from our various teaching sites gathered on the streets of downtown Atlanta to celebrate getting fit by demonstrating some of the fun ways to get there! Anna Hamer, Linda Long, Shannon Goodman and Molly Lay all promoted getting fit through demonstrations of Purna Yoga [serenity---even on a busy urban street], FitBall [the big guys who tried it out soon realized that big blue ball had a mean streak] and the Tai Chi Fan Form [as beautiful as a Lotus opening in the late afternoon sun]. And Sandy Bramlett and drummers seduced many of the street walkers into a hot and sweaty Zumba! session [watch a short video]. It was a great day and, best of all, some of our favorite class regulars came out to enjoy the fun with us. We passed out lots of fliers letting bystanders and passersby know exactly where they can come for any of these classes. If you missed it, well, we missed you! ------------ ATLANTA STREETS ALIVE!
Seminole Studio will be there showing off our stuff - Nia, Zumba, Fan Form Tai Chi, Yoga, Hooping - live drumming! The route: Edgewood Avenue from Inman Park to Peachtree Street downtown. According to the interactive map on the ASA website, Seminole Studio activities will be located near the intersection of Edgewood and Boulevard. Come on Down!!! ------------ COME GET YOUR STRETCH ON! A NEW mid-day, lunchtime Hatha Yoga class starts July 8th at Seminole Studio and will continue every Thursday throughout the summer. Come have fun in a light-hearted yet vigorous class taught by Amy Rakestraw, RYT on Thursdays from 12:00-1:00 pm. $10/class or 10-class card for $8/class. Your first class is FREE! We supply the mat. ------------ SEMINOLE STUDIO DOES ANOTHER GREEN THING! We had True Green Technologies install a radiant barrier in the ceiling. This is a NASA-developed material that will reflect 97% of the superheating effects of the sun on our metal, uninsulated roof in summer and, in winter, reflect 87% of the radiant heat in the space [from hot bodies!] back in. Overall, this radiant barrier will assist in achieving a more efficient operation of our Carrier heat pump--which has been struggling in this Atlanta heat wave! So, come enjoy the "krinkly mirrors" on the ceiling and the new, wonderful coolness of the space, even while basking in the sun streaming in the skylights. p.s We already use only CFL bulbs, recycle plastic and aluminum, and have zero-VOC walls.
------------ WHAT A DEAL!! Attend just ten Instructor's Choice classes during June/July/August and receive a free 4-class Instructor's Choice class card....a $50 value! OR Attend all thirteen classes during June/July/August and receive a FREE 45-minute Foot Reflexology session or a 30-minute massage session with the Creative Loafing "BEST OF" massage therapist at Attune [she is just 1 block away!]. "I currently travel from Orlando, Florida for my appointments with Dale....her work is impeccably intelligent, confident and intuitive." So,
be SURE to sign in when you come to class and Molly says she is looking
forward to spending her summer Saturdays with you every week at 10:00
a.m. at the Seminole Studio. ------------
After the adventure of hooking up with each other on various MARTA trains (hanging out the doors and yelling and cellphone calling and running up and down platforms) to get there, the workout was almost anti-climatic…..until Jane lead the warm-up. Yes she did!!! And then Richard Simmons dropped his shorts and lead us through a very, very “diva” workout. Billy Blanks taught us how to turn a knee-lift into something wonderful and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger welcomed everyone via live streaming from California. Denise Austin, obviously a Jane Fonda groupie, was her bubbly self and Debbie Allen moved her voluptuous person to show us how to do some serious Latin moves. In all, it was just a whole, whole lot of fun — and worthwhile too, as it was a charity event benefiting G-CAPP. We got lots of free stuff in the vendor area, were all on television and Anna got up close and personal with Richard Simmons and Molly even lead a little mini-class while we were all standing around waiting on things to start up. Jane promises there’ll be another one in Atlanta next year, though she followed that with a tweet later that day saying she is selling her Atlanta loft and moving to Los Angeles. Oh well.
------------ WORKSHOP! *** For informative highlights and a report on this very educational workshop, click here. The More You Know, the More You Can Eat Saturday, April 17, 2010 It’s
true, the more involved we become in making decisions and taking
control of what we consume, the more food we will be able to eat.
This session will be our first take on where we are and where we would
like to go on this subject. This is an open forum and will allow for
questions and an opportunity to have a follow -up discussion. The
major emphasis will be on some simple approaches to food selection that
promotes a healthy lifestyle with consideration of sex, age and
activity. Registration Deadline: April 14th. If you're a BIMI instructor or wish to pay at the time of the workshop, click here to register via email. To register and make your payment: |
