Anna's Yoga Teacher Training Journal

Yoga has been a growing part of my life for the last 10 years or so. I have practiced and been a student of many teachers here in Atlanta and when I travel. Much gratitude to all my teachers. For my birthday last year I went to Esalen for a weeklong yoga workshop (a gift from my sweety). I think that was when it finally sunk in that I wanted to continue in earnest my training to teach yoga...  read full article

A Balanced Workout

Whether you go to the same class, engage in the same routine, or cross train, each time you address your fitness you should keep BALANCE in mind. Balance in muscle-group strengths, balancing strength with flexibility, balancing aerobic training with strength training and simply practicing your balance.

Has 3 nights a week of "bench" gotten you out of balance?

Your Relationship with Your Body

Just as in any relationship, you must find time to attend to that relationship, no matter how you feel. Attending is listening and true listening occurs only with focus. Focus can begin by merely setting aside the time.

In the Future

…every aspect of fitness will show a concern for equilibrium. Rather than pushing to the max, we'll exercise with moderation; rather than overworking certain muscles, we'll pursue alignment and body awareness in every move we make. Exercise in the future will become a vehicle for experiencing passions, expressing individuality and maximizing our potential.... appearance will take a back seat to inner health and beauty.

Exercises for the Heart

Thankfulness: Write down everything in your life that you are thankful for having and experiencing. These can be people, places, feelings and emotions, and material things -- such as family, career, friends, children, education, pets, nature, health, home, love, spirituality, books, clothing, tools, joy…

Observe a familiar place in a new way:  Grab a pen or pencil and some paper and go to one of your favorite places. This can be inside, like a coffee shop or bookstore, or outdoors at the beach or park. Sit down, get comfortable, and then start writing down the details of your surroundings. Write as if you were explaining this place to an individual who has never been there. Make sure to describe the sounds, smells, lighting, colors, textures, and how you feel emotionally and mentally. By the time you finish, you'll realize how many new things you've discovered about your favorite place.

Gratefulness:  Write a thank you note to a person you love or care for and tell them how grateful you are to have them in your life. This is such a simple, easy way to express your feelings to another and let them know what a special place they hold in your heart.

Forgiveness:  Write a letter of forgiveness. It is important to let go of the hurt, anger, pain, resentment, or any other negative feelings you may still be holding onto from past or present relationships. It could be an ex-lover, a friend or family member, a teacher, a coworker, anyone that you need to forgive so that you can release the negative energy and emotions from your life. You might even consider writing a letter to yourself. It doesn't matter if the person you are writing to is living or not, this letter is meant to help you let go of the past and move on to a bright new future.

The Future:  Write down all of the things that you want to welcome into and create in your life. This could be a teacher, a spouse or lover, a new career, a new home, or even better health. After you've written these things down, take them one at a time and describe why you want them, how you would benefit from having them, and the differences that having these things would create in you.
