Nutrition Workshop Report -- April 2010

We CAN eat more food!  We SHOULD eat more food!

Joyce McKay enlightened the attendees on many things nutrition-ally in her wonderful presentation on April 17 at the Seminole Studio.

Here are a few tidbits:

 * "Eat" is the operable word.  Drinking juice is fine, but you should EAT 5-9 servings of fruit and veggies a day and that means chewing!

 * Eat more fish.  Really pump up those omega-3s!  Fish-oil supplements are fine, but, again, EAT is the operative word.  EAT the wild-caught fish!  And if that's too pricey, buy the canned salmon....just as good.

 * Despite popular thought, beans, rice and cornbread can be eaten at any time during a day to gain the "complete protein" effect because it all happens in the lower tract.  They do not have to be eaten together.

 * Thirst and hunger are often confused.  If you think you are hungry when it doesn't seem time, just drink some water and you'll discover you were just thirsty.

 * "We have more wings than we do chickens!"  Joyce said that the chicken wing has more fat than any other part of the chicken yet they are consumed by the heap daily and you can hardly drive down a street that doesn't have a "wing" place.

Joyce helped the instructor-attendees understand what we can impart to our students in a general way but advised that recommending supplements or plans of action for eating should be avoided.  We should tell the student talk to their doctor because even supplements can have unanticipated reactions with some prescription medications.

Attendees also found her detailed discussion of age-related body changes relative to nutrition very informative.

Joyce was entertaining and extremely well informed.  We were given a test at the end and did "pretty good".  All were also given some nutrition-ally correct treats to take home.

She had so much more information to impart that we will re-schedule Joyce again for a session this Fall.  Watch for that and don't miss it!
